The 30-Minute Weekend Store Health Check
A practical routine that catches issues before they cost you sales — checkout test, mobile check, app audit, and performance scan. Do it every Saturday morning with your coffee.
Why Saturday Morning?
Most store changes happen during the week — app installs, theme tweaks, new products, price updates. By Saturday morning, if something broke, it's been broken for up to 5 days. The sooner you catch it, the fewer customers you lose.
This routine takes 30 minutes. I've been doing it for 18 months. It's caught three broken checkouts, two app conflicts, and one mobile layout disaster before any of them cost me more than a day's revenue.
The 4-Step Routine
Step 1: Full Checkout Test (10 min)
Open an incognito window. Do not log in. Go through the complete customer journey:
- Browse your store homepage — does it load normally?
- Search for a product — does search work?
- View a product page — are images, price, variants, and Add to Cart all visible?
- Add to cart — does the cart update correctly?
- Go to checkout — does the checkout page load completely?
- Fill in a test order with real payment (use $1 test mode or a real small purchase → refund immediately)
- Complete the order — do you get a confirmation page? Confirmation email?
If any step fails, fix it immediately. Don't wait until Monday. If you can't fix it yourself, contact your theme developer or app support right away.
Step 2: Mobile Quick Check (5 min)
Open your store on your phone (incognito/private mode). Check:
- Homepage: does it load without horizontal scrolling?
- Product page: are images tappable? Are variant dropdowns usable?
- Cart: does the cart drawer/slide-out work?
- Checkout: can you complete a test order on mobile?
- Menu: does the hamburger menu open and all links work?
Mobile layout breaks are the most common silent issue. A desktop user might tolerate misalignment; a mobile user will just leave.
Step 3: App & Billing Audit (10 min)
Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Billing. Scan every line item.
- Any app you don't recognize? → Google it. If it's not essential, uninstall.
- Any app you installed for a campaign that's over? → Uninstall.
- Any app with a price increase you didn't notice? → Evaluate if it's still worth it.
- Any category with 2+ apps? → Can you consolidate?
Go to Shopify Admin → Apps. For each app: when did you last configure or use it? If > 30 days and it's not essential infrastructure → uninstall. You can always reinstall later.
Step 4: Performance Spot-Check (5 min)
Open your store in incognito → right-click → Inspect → Lighthouse tab → Generate report (or use PageSpeed Insights). Look for:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) under 2.5 seconds? If not, check which images or scripts are slowing it down.
- TBT (Total Blocking Time) under 200ms? If not, a third-party script is the likely culprit — check recently installed apps.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) under 0.1? If not, something (usually an ad, popup, or lazy-loaded image) is pushing content around.
Don't obsess over the exact scores. Just check if they're roughly in the green zone and not trending worse week over week.
Make It a Habit
The routine takes 30 minutes. Over a year, that's 26 hours — about one day of your life. In exchange, you'll catch most issues within days instead of weeks, save hundreds in lost revenue, and sleep better knowing your store actually works. Best ROI of any recurring task in my business.
