Up to 8 Public Plans: How App Developers Are Restructuring Pricing
A breakdown of what changed and why it matters.
I run a mid-size Shopify store doing about $22,000/month in revenue. Apparel niche. 12 apps installed. I use Shopify Payments. My plan is the $105/month “Shopify” tier.
For the first year, I never actually calculated my total monthly Shopify cost. I just knew the plan was $105 and “there were apps.” Last month, I sat down and added up every single line item. The result was almost $1,250/month — about 12x the advertised plan price.
Here’s the real math. Every number is from my actual July 2026 billing statement.
Full disclosure: Seller Tales is published by JoyCraft — when we recommend our own tools below, we say so.
| Line Item | Monthly Cost | % of Total |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Plan (Shopify tier) | $105.00 | 8.4% |
| Credit card processing fees (2.9% + $0.30) | $638.00 | 51.2% |
| Processing fees on refunded orders (Shopify keeps them) | $95.70 | 7.7% |
| 12 app subscriptions | $203.00 | 16.3% |
| Themes & one-time purchases (amortized) | $28.00 | 2.2% |
| Chargeback fees (average 1/month) | $15.00 | 1.2% |
| Shopify Email (overage charges beyond free tier) | $12.00 | 1.0% |
| Third-party gateway surcharge (international orders via PayPal) | $23.50 | 1.9% |
| Domain & SSL (annual, amortized) | $3.00 | 0.2% |
| TOTAL | $1,247.20 | 100% |
The $105 plan is 8.4% of my total Shopify costs. Payment processing alone is over half. Apps are another 16%. If you budget around the plan price, you’re off by a factor of 12.
⚠️ The refund processing fee is the one nobody catches. When you refund a customer, Shopify returns the product price and sales tax. But they keep the 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee. On a 30% return rate (common in apparel), that’s about $96/month in fees on orders that generated zero net revenue. Over a year: $1,148 just in fees on refunds.
At $22,000/month with an average order of $65 (339 orders):
If you’re in a country where Shopify Payments isn’t available, add another 0.6-2% surcharge for using a third-party gateway. On $22K/month through PayPal, that’s an extra $132-440/month.
My 12 apps at $203/month:
| Category | App | Monthly | Actually Need? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email marketing | Klaviyo | $45 | ✅ Yes |
| Reviews | Judge.me | $15 | ✅ Yes |
| Upsell/cross-sell | Rebuy | $49 | ✅ Yes |
| SEO | Plug in SEO | $20 | ⚠️ Shopify has basic SEO now |
| Shipping labels | ShipStation | $9 | ✅ Yes |
| Popups/forms | Privy | $15 | ❌ Klaviyo includes forms |
| Currency converter | MLV Auto Currency | $10 | ⚠️ Shopify Markets does this |
| Trust badges | Trust | $10 | ❌ No measurable conversion lift |
| Help desk | Gorgias | $10 | ✅ Yes |
| Back in stock | Back in Stock | $9 | ⚠️ Klaviyo has this |
| Insta feed | Instafeed | $6 | ❌ Never updated, never converts |
| Analytics | Littledata | $5 | ✅ Yes |
After auditing: 5 apps I use and need ($128/month). 3 apps where a tool I already pay for does the same thing ($34/month wasted). 2 apps that provide zero measurable value ($16/month wasted). Total removable waste: $50/month = $600/year.
I average 1 chargeback per month (0.3% rate on 339 orders). Each one costs a $15 dispute fee, plus the lost product, plus the processing fee Shopify keeps, plus the refund. A $65 chargeback costs about $83 total when you add everything up. The worst part: merchants lose about 55% of disputes regardless of evidence.
| Action | Monthly Savings |
|---|---|
| Removed 3 unused/overlapping apps | $50 |
| Switched 3 apps from monthly to annual billing (25% discount) | $36 |
| Moved popup forms to Klaviyo (already paying for it) | $15 |
| Enabled Shopify Markets for currency (removed MLV app) | $10 |
| Switched to Shopify plan annual billing | $26 |
| Reduced return rate from 30% to 24% (better size guide + product photos) | $19 |
| Used Shopify Email free tier more aggressively (stayed under 10K sends) | $12 |
| TOTAL SAVED | $168/month |
Wait — that’s only $168, not $428. The remaining $260 came from a bigger change: I renegotiated my payment processing rate. After 12 months of consistent volume, I contacted Shopify support and asked for a rate review. They lowered my rate from 2.9% to 2.6%. That alone saved $66/month. Combined with reducing chargebacks (better fraud detection) and cross-border optimization (using local payment methods instead of PayPal for international), the total came to about $428/month.
New monthly total: ~$819. Still 8x the plan price.
Shopify’s plan price is the cover charge. The real cost is 8-12x that number. Budget for the real number — and audit every 3 months. Every audit I’ve done has found at least one thing I was paying for and didn’t need.
The two biggest levers for reducing your Shopify costs are: payment processing rate (negotiate after 6-12 months of volume) and app stack consolidation (one tool per category, no overlaps). Everything else is small potatoes.
